St Cathryns MASCOR Club Championships

St Cathryns MASCOR Club Championships

The Mascor St Cathryn’s club championships were played on Saturday 6th  and Sunday 7th April 2024, and the wet weather did not keep the golfers off the course. At times the temperatures dropped to 15 degrees, like a typical summers day in London, but the golfers continued and showed their “Vasbyt”, as they were soaked both days.
The course set up, over the two days saw a second red flag on the eight green, typical championship pin positions, three tight, three medium and three easy pin positions. The rain Saturday night saw the greenkeeper change some of the flag positions and the 16th and 17th tees ( that had become dangerously slippery) and the distance lost on those two holes were made up on other tee boxes.
The rough was not too rough and the wet weather did not allow for excessive run and the greens were a slow 9.5 on the stimpmeter.
In a hotly contested A division with seven players, ( the most ever in this division), Troy Gifford led from the first tee, with the rest of the division waiting for  Troy to make a mistake. Troy played a two over on day one and four over on the second day to end the tournament on a gross score  of 150 over the two days.
In the other divisions schoolboy Matt du Preez took the B division and our  senior player Carl Groenewald, who made his name in the Umvoti district on the tennis and squash courts, took the C division.
