A rarity occurred at St Cathryn’s

A rarity occurred at St Cathryn’s on Saturday 25 May 2019 when visiting golfer, Melmoth golf club captain, Martin Dekker, achieved an Albatross on hole number 12, the Par 4, 287 m. Albatross is when a golfer gets a hole in one on a par 4, or two shots into a par 5 hole. Martin got off lightly as he did not have to buy any drinks for the patrons in the club, as one or two were out on the course and others were at Schulfest.
This coming weekend we welcome Midlands Spraychem cc to the sponsorship board at St Cathryn’s who have taken over the sponsorship of the Matchplay tournament this coming weekend, for the next three years. The top 8 players from the Tuta carriers clubchamps will be playing for the Coveted Blue Nel jacket, that will be worn by the Midlands Spraychem match play champion.
The first rounds will start at 7h30 on Saturday morning 1 June 2019, and the semi final will be played later on Saturday. A Plate final will be played for the first time on Sunday 2 June 2019 and the plate final golfers will be tee-ing off before the match play final golfer. The first round of golf players will be allowed to make use of carts.
A Player to look out for is the Match play specialist, Piet Coetzee, a wily sixty something year old golfer, traveling down from Gauteng, who has made it known that match play golf is his bread and butter. Another firm favourite is Lawrence “Protractor” Savage, who will analysing all shots and course angles into the greens.
Match play golf is a golfing format where two golfers play against each other, off a scratch (zero handicap ). The aim is that a golfer playing against an opponent and the golfer with the least amount of shots is deemed the winner of the hole. Scoring of this format is always by way of holes won, and a game could go less than the eighteen holes. The winner who has won four holes, and with the three holes left to play the apponent can’t catch the winner. This format also allows a golfer to give his opponent the putt, meaning that that golfer then doesn’t putt out on that specific hole.
The SANLAM cancer challenge is to be played on the weekend of the 8th June 2019, and will be played in conjunction with the Farmers Agri-care monthly mug. All golfers are welcome to play and the winner of their division gets the opportunity to play against golfers from other clubs in their division for the grand prize to play at Sun City.
We are open for Golf this weekend but will not be open on Friday 31 May 2019 for Dinner as we encourage our members to support the Fun Quiz evening at Arcadia – please contact them for details.
