The St Cathryn’s Golf Club is proud to announce and Thank our new sponsors of our Matchplay Championships – Midlands Spraychem for their very generous sponsorship of the Matchplay Championships for the next three years. The Midlands Spraychem match play finals were played over the weekend – 1st and 2nd June 2019. The weather was perfect on both days but frost hampered the mowing on day one, so golfers putted on the frosted greens until the weather warmed up.
The top eight players, who qualified from the Tuta Carriers club champs played a few weeks ago were, Merwin Rabe drawn against Kevin Williams and Merwin beat Kevin 4 and 2. Father and son Tienie and Marius took their game to 6 and 4, with Marius the winner in that round. Dieter Meyer beat Piet Coetzee 3 and 2 to qualify for the next round and NTE work colleagues Fanie van Wyk and Lawrence Savage played to the fourteenth hole when Lawrence put two balls out of bounds , to lose that game.
The afternoon round started then with Dieter playing Fanie and that game went to the twentieth hole before Fanie won and Merwin played Marius only to beat Maruis 4 and 2.
Sunday morning the Plate final players Piet Coetzee took on Tienie Muller, and both these players have years of experience, much more so than the Proteas who lost their opening game in England against England. Piet walked off by winning the game on the last hole. Tienie was at one stage two holes up but Piet hung in to the end to be victorious.
The final of the match play had drawn a small crowd from the 14th hole onwards, and at that stage Fanie was three up against Merwin, and on that hole Fanie sunk a three foot putt to halve the hole. On the 16th Fanie had to declare his second shot unplayable, drop the ball for a penalty on the red tee box 16th. He was now playing his third, whilst Merwin was well placed on the opposite fairway. The sixteenth hole was halved, when disaster struck for Merwin on the 17th short par 4, when his second shot deflected off a Pine tree and he lost his ball and Fanie got his nerves settled to putt a well placed second shot to win the hole to seal his victory three and one.
