A Very successful “Earls Cup” was played over the weekend between St Cathryn’s and Greytown golf clubs. This fun tournament is played annually and is in honour of Earl Browning, who was a very good golfer and farmer in the Greytown area.
Saturday 27 February 2021, ten golfers from each team tee’d off in Greytown, for a 9 hole better ball competition, later in the afternoon, they played foursomes and on Sunday 28 February 2021, singles, at St Cathryn’s. Captains Dieter Meyer and Gareth Larkan paired the players for each of the formats and rounds, but Gareth from Greytown had the upper hand and by the evening of Saturday, we found the Greytown team was leading by 7,5 to 2,5 and that meant that the greatest golfing come back had to be made by team St Cathryn’s. If they were to win the tournament they would need to win all the Sunday games. The Greytown team decided to camp in St Cathryn’s Hall to “acclimatise”, and so be ready for the 08h00 Sunday tee-off.
Some very interesting drives and observations were made by the silent reporter and were recorded on both courses on both the first holes. Brent Barkhuizen showing signs of jet lag (he drove down from Johannesburg), when his drive off the first tee box barely made 30 meters onto the 9th fairway. Equally so, Andrew Mason, normally a very large crowd puller with his rocket like distance drives, barely clearing the river 30 meters further. Behind him Peter Hardy and Gareth Larkan also battled to get off the tee… The drive of the day, went to Phil Waller that did not drive his ball, but only moved the ball “9cm” off the tee box. Despite these starting shots — Greytown put that all behind them and beat St Cathryn’s by 14 games to 6.
Congratulations to Greytown Club that are now the holders of the “Earl’s Cup”, it was Wonderful to have Earls’ daughter, Rose Cyrus to hand over the Trophy and enjoy lunch with the golfers that stayed to braai. Thank you to all the chaps who played and for the Great weekend of fun and golf that was had by all.
Our next Farmers Agri-Care Monthly Mug will be held on Saturday 13 March 2021. To book for golf and carts please phone Piet 0832691661.
